Because smart meters are now nearly universal across Japan, you may not be able to use electricity right away if you do not complete the necessary procedures prior to moving into your new house or apartment. Make sure to call the TEPCO Customer Center well in advance.

Before you move into a new place, you need to contact TEPCO via telephone or fill in their online form so that your electricity will be hooked up and set to go from the day you move in.

With smart meters now nearly universal across Japan, you may not be able to use electricity in your new home right away unless you sign up for electricity prior to moving in. To avoid delays, make sure to contact TEPCO or an alternative electricity provider well in advance.

Required information for setting up your electricity

  1. Your address (current and new)
  2. Your name (i.e. the name on the contract)
  3. TEPCO customer number* (listed on your meter reading slip) - if signing up via telephone, your customer number is not required. Doing so online does require your customer number. If you are a returning TEPCO customer, it is not necessary to make a whole new contract for electricity at your new address*.
  4. Moving date/time
  5. Payment method (credit card, automatic direct debit/withdrawal)

TEPCO Customer Center: Reception Hours

TEPCO Customer Center reception is open from Monday to Saturday (except holidays) between 9:00-17:00. The Customer Center phone lines tend to be extremely busy, so it can be difficult to get through. It is possible to set up your home electricity service on the TEPCO website instead.

Finding the best time to get through to TEPCO’s Customer Center

It is particularly difficult to get through to TEPCO’s call center on Mondays (all day) or immediately after a holiday, as well as on weekdays between 9:00-10:00, 12:00-13:00, and 16:00-17:00. If it is absolutely necessary for you to contact TEPCO by telephone, try to avoid these times.

If you are moving and want to continue your TEPCO electricity contract at your new address, you can stop the electricity at your current address and start it up at your new address in one single procedure.

The TEPCO website contains many forms that can be submitted online to fulfill their necessary procedures. You can check which forms are available online in the table below.

If you need to stop your electricity at your current address and start it up at your new address, you can complete all necessary procedures online by continuing your current TEPCO contract.

However, please be aware that if you do not know your TEPCO customer number (NOTE: it is printed on your meter reading slip), your only choice will be to contact TEPCO by telephone. Obviously your new address (i.e. where you will be moving to) will be required, so be sure to have this ready. If you are moving out of Japan, however, you will not be able to proceed online and will need to phone TEPCO directly.

Changing your name or your amperage cannot be done online. Both require a call to the TEPCO Customer Center.
